The Hollywood Music Scene 1975-1976

Hope all is well and your soul is rested. We are going to talk about Hollywood, CA and the music scene in 1975. I was from Milwaukee, WI, Yes, where Liberace, and Les Paul, and the Violent Femmes are from. I had jammed with Deniel Edwards a fellow Milwaukee mate here in Milwaukee, and it was cool, kick butt and professional. I decided to move to LA and start a Rock’N Roll band with Deniel. I arrived at LAX and he was there to pick me up, after a killer lunch with my parents and Chris Jacobs in Milwaukee. He knew how to get to the Tropicana Hotel on Santa Monica Blvd. That’s where we stayed when I was in the Tongue Band in ’72. I rented a room for a month. I met with Deniel, he introduced me to Jon Hyde and Glenn Hyde, Jon was playing with a group called Detective with Michael De Barres on vocals, I first saw him in “Silverhead” they opened for an English group called “Uriah Heep” he was also in the classic movie “To Sir with Love”, and Michael Monarch was from “Steppenwolf” on guitar, Tony Kaye from “Yes”, Bobby Pickett a monster bass player, and Jon Hyde, he had all the Bonham chops and Robert Palmer chops to the maxx, great feel.

“Evolution of Music”

As time went on Deniel had some problems. After a month Glen and Jon invited me to live there. Ruby Starr had told me Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple wanted to talk to me. I had called him from Milwaukee and he told me he hired Cozey Powell, he said seeing your coming out anyway call me when you get here. I said great, talk to you soon. Finally after all this I was somewhat comfortable in Hollywood I called Ritchie, he said he was having dinner at the Rainbow at 8pm, he said join me, I was there at 8 and so was Ritchie. We talked about music, more music, his new band “Rainbow” and we had a blast just talking about dreams and he wanted a success after leaving “Deep Purple”. Well, I had the huge fried shrimp at the Rainbow Bar & Grill on Sunset Blvd. I love those shrimps and they still have them, the pizzas are tastey too. I loved the Rainbow then! Tony always took great care of us at the Rainbow. So, we’re having great conversation and in comes Carmine Appice. I love Carmine, an all-time classic rocker and probably in my opinion one of the best drummers in the history of rock. Then Cozy Powell is here, he’s my other idle with his chops on the Jeff Beck Cd’s he did, then Ronnie Dio, golden voice…! Badfinger then comes in, and Jerry and Steve from “Humble Pie” we had the whole 1/2 of the Rainbow , girls, girls and partying! Definitely one of the best nights of my life. Rock ‘n Roll.

For a musician and a group at the time you wanted a record deal. A day or two later after being at the Rainbow, Jon Hyde got word that Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin were signing “Detective’ to Swan Song Records. Bad Co. and Zepplin were both in the Malibu Colony.

Jon was soooooo excited. What a shot. He was walking on water, you would be too. Jon is show shy, yet so sincere and a gentle soul I was so happy for him. Well, more rehearsals at SIR. It’s time to rock. Everything changed, I moved in with my friend Stephan and Jon got his new place and Glenn and Renee got their place. Well, life was great, dreams were coming true, life was so much fun at that time. A group called “Valentino” with Pete Comita was trying to lure Glen away, he stayed with “Detective” and would eventually later Road Manage “Valentino”.

Let’s talk about the Starwood, the Roxy, the Rainbow and Gazzarri’s. It was the wildest days of rock. Detective rocked the Starwood, Arthur Kane from the New York Dolls had Blackie, Rush played their debut album there. I had met a friend named Hernando Courtright at the Starwood and he and some girls would come over and party at my apt. We always had fun and he was very sincere. So Hernando and I became the best of friends & party brothers, platforms, Bowie, girls were our life at the time. Danny who went on to the Rembrandts-Friends was also hanging out. Jon and Michael, Glen, from Detective were all close by, West Hollywood was a fun place to be. A month after I had known Hernando, he said well come over to my house and I said cool. He said come to the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, then come to 909. I said Warren Beatty lives in the penthouse doesn’t he? He said yeah. So I went and we listened to music (Be-Bop Deluxe, Queen, etc)and had a blast. I asked him why he lives in a hotel and he said my father owns it. Hernando was blessed being part of the Beverly Hills history. I’m glad I didn’t know about this until I knew him for awhile for, I think that’s why we are still friends, I didn’t like him for what he had. I didn’t even know and we loved to hang. We’d take the limos out to see Aerosmith, 10 CC, and many shows…I love Ya Bud…!

So any way back to the music scene. We saw Paul Kossoff from”Free” play with”Back Street Crawler” he died on his flight back to London. We saw everyone at that time at the Starwood. Hernando knew Randy Rhoads very well, when he was in “Quiet Riot” we went to rehearsals. Randy went on to play with OZZY , we were so happy for him, and he died in a plane crash in Orlando years later. Everyone knew Randy was going to make it. We saw a lot of bands. “Cheap Trick” just got their deal and played the Starwood. People were playing Gazzarris too. The newest band on the scene were called “Van Halen” I saw them at the Starwood alot. Gary managed the club and we were friend since ’72 when he hired “Tongue”. One time a group called “Wolfgang” who would later become “Autograph” opened the show for this new group “Van Halen”. “Van Halen” wore jump suits and moved the gear in and then get dressed for the show. So all of you young guys out there in 2007 move the gear and shut-up….pay your dues we have all had to. I’m serious! They rocked, and David did a kick rap.

The band got quiet and David told us about a poker game and someone trying to rip him off, won’t give David the money he is owed, and he said ” Don’t Make Me Wake Up Joe” he still won’t pay, so David said “Meet Joe” it was a 357 and the band came back in with the fury, it was funny. Detective was rehearsing to go out on the next “Kiss”, tour the biggest one ever. I moved back to Milwaukee and went to Montreal. Hernando and Jackie Fox from “the Runaways” got together and I loved Joan Jett. Hernando and I had so much fun and we are still friends today. You have to love that. I hope you all have a handful of close friends. Deniel and I just didn’t gel, I don’t know what ever happened to him or Glenn Hyde. I know Jon from Detective is a trainer-vegetarian-a man helping people live properly/God bless you Jon. He also lived with Renee Russo the model for awhile, don’t forget Jon is a monster drummer so if you hare of Jon playing the blues and funk-Go see him. Life was changing again and time to hold on….! These were definitely some of the best days of my life…! I met some wonderful people, God bless you all! We were having way too much fun. Health and Happiness…

Writing a Rock Song

v

It is unarguable that rock music is one of the popular music genres in the world. There are a lot of people who try their best to writing a rock song when they have caught inspiration from listening to renowned rock artists.

In writing a rock song there are several approaches. A lot of writers employ the simple verse-chorus approach. Yet others use variations where a bridge and additional verse and chorus are added. This pattern is employed when a song is not long enough and needs an additional verse to make it conclude well.

Have you realized most rock songs do not exceed five minutes in length? That’s what has been found to be popular among rock lovers. You want to keep the length within 5 minutes while having a catchy but simple melody. One great way to learn more about writing a rock song is to study rock music guides out there. These guides are written by rock music critics and enthusiasts to add to the knowledge base of people seeking info about rock music and songs.

So what can you possibly write songs about? Many rock songwriters write lyrics about events that have happened in their own lives in as a way to expressing their emotions to their audience who may be going through similar experiences. But the one thing you can always write rock songs about is love and relationships. Every person in life has their own love issues – both old and young. Writing a rock song on this subject will get your listeners to become emotionally attached to the song because they can easily relate with it.

Your lyrics must however follow a particular pattern – like having the lines of each verse being equal. One thing you should do is to ensure that your melody lines could easily be used in the song’s chorus. This technique is known as “hook’. It’s a great way to make your music catchy.

The success of writing a rock song in highly dependent on how catchy the tunes or melody is and how simple your lyrics are plus how it relates well with your potential audience. This calls for creativity. You need to use your imagination to paint a clear picture to allow you to tell a story that your audience can easily relate with.

Music Enhances Intelligence

There are many myths in the world today, both proven and unproven. The most common of myths are generated by parents or grandparents to keep the children disciplined or in line. Myths tend to stem from make believe stories too, often believed by the youngest of children, or simply those who are too naive to see the truth. Music also holds different types of myth. There myths and legends about haunted guitars, or myths about famous music artists dying at roughly the same age, such as Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, Jimmi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and the very latest artist to add to the list, Amy Winehouse. They all died at the same age of 27, and they were all famous for being hugely talented with lives cut tragically short. There are also other myths involving music, such as music will help you become smarter.

Music influences a lot of our emotions, especially the basic emotions of sadness, happiness and anger. Happiness can be increased through listening to upbeat and happier songs. While listening to slower sadder songs can often make you cry, or cry harder as the case may be. Anger is also an emotion that can be enhanced through music. One of the most common forms of music that enhances this is rock or metal music. Rock can be said to be the father of metal music, where metal was formed from rock itself. Metal is harder, but both metal and rock can ignite or add fuel to one’s anger, or release it as the case may be. All these emotions however prove one thing about music, it is a great stress reliever. However, it is almost far fetched for some to believe that music can enhance one’s intelligence. Or, is it?

The Mozart Effect is an activity done to increase human intelligence. It is called Mozart Effect because the music used for this test is Mozart’s Sonata. Most of Mozart Effect research has been conducted on college undergraduates and has statistically been proven to increase their IQ levels to 8-9 points with the increase lasting for 10-15 minutes after listening for 10 minutes. Some news even claimed that Mozart’s music improves a baby’s intelligence. Although there are no tests conducted yet which prove that music influences an infant’s intelligence. Studies have shown that music students received more academic honors and awards than non-music students. Another study reported that music lessons for kids help make their minds sharper as they grow and mature.

For the unborn, there are also studies showing the ability of a fetus to hear sounds while in utero. Babies respond with an increase in heart rate and other physiologic indicators. Many studies have reported that a positive sign the fetus has been stimulated by music is indicated by a change in heart rate. The exposure to music in the prenatal period increases attention of newborns, more sound imitation and earlier vocalization. The fetus hears its mother’s voice mostly, as well as it’s mother’s breathing and her other internal sounds. This is why new born babies prefer to hear its mother’s voice because a mother’s voice is literally music to a child’s ears. Thus, singing along with music while your child is yet unborn will have some positive benefits at birth.

Some scientist don’t agree with the theory that an increase in heart rate signals a positive response in the fetus. It could be that the increase in heart rate of a fetus signals that a baby is not comfortable with the sound. Of course not all kinds of music can be played for an infant. The baby does respond to what he or she hears. Expectant mothers should carefully choose which music her baby should hear. Classical music and nature sounds could be soothing for the baby while loud ones may not be as pleasing.

Again, there is still no concrete proof that listening to music definitely enhances the fetuses intelligence. However, classical music stimulates different areas of the brain, which stimulates better connections in the brain. The hypothesis says that the increase in connectors will result in enhanced memory. Multiple studies have shown that babies recognize the sounds or music they hear during pregnancy. It is very important that the mother is relaxed and comfortable as the baby is affected by the mother’s emotions. Soothing music helps the mother and the baby to relax, while loud music disturbs the mother and startles the baby.

What are some good musical choices for your unborn child? Choose soothing classical, light rock, blues or any other genera you truly enjoy. The choice is yours, but be aware that your unborn child very well may be listening!

What Rock Scales Are Recommended

Rock scales are very important for guitar players, they are the foundation of any rock guitar solo embellishing a song by adding flavor and melody. They are the bread and butter of any guitar lesson on the subject.

The pentatonic scale

If there is one type of scale that may be able to bring together all sub genres of rock music, that should be the pentatonic scales. Pentatonic scales are very common in blues songs, which is why they represent an important part for rock music, as well.

These scales are especially used in guitar solos and riffs, which is why they are so common. If you are looking for a way to start learning rock scales, starting with the pentatonic would be the way to go.

The natural minor scale

Blending quite harmoniously with the pentatonic, the natural minor scale is a must learn for any guitar player loving rock music. Even when used alone, this scale has a great effect, as it makes rock songs sound more symphonic. You have probably heard about famous rock symphonies, and you should know that the natural minor scale is heavily used for making these pieces sound the way they do.

The Phrygian scale

If you want to lend a certain flavor to your rock pieces, a good idea would be to try introducing some Phrygian scales into the mix. Used especially for clean passages in rock songs, they give them a certain Spanish inspired flavor that makes them sound quite unique.

The Locrian scale

In case the type of rock music you enjoy playing is darker and more mysterious, you should learn how to play Locrian scales on your guitar. These scales flatten the second and the fifth intervals, making the sounds emitted by your guitar to sound darker, and even downright evil. Depending on the rock subgenre you are into, you can choose between various scales and use them in your songs.

Most common rock scales

If you are just beginning as a guitar player, and rock is your thing, you should start with the most common rock scales. As you may already suspect by now, they are stemmed of blues music, and they deliver certain types of sounds. For instance, you should take into consideration that the minor pentatonic scale is often preferred to the major variation because of its more emotional sound. The use of major pentatonic is allowed, as well, but it is not as common.

Pop Music Hits

Pop music hits over the generations has really changed immensely and no more so than in the last five years. Throughout the evolution of popular music up until the last 20 years pop music usually encompassed only one genre of music. Take into consideration Baroque, Renaissance, and Classical music. The music was by different composers but stayed well within the same type of musical category. When recorded music came onto the scene and began being broadcasted over radio waves the transmission of pop music hits became different but not it overall mandate which was that it still retained its origin in one type of music.

Think about the advent of jazz during the early part of the 20th century. Jazz was prevalent for a while as the main type of pop music. Anything you heard would have a jazz feel to it. We’re talking pop jazz here not the blues, the blues although popular amongst musicians themselves were more of an influential genre than a popular one. Then of course there was rock and roll which really dominated the pop music hit culture until the advent of Motown and R&B music.

Rock and roll and R&B dominated pop music until Disco came along and then to a small extent country music gained some popularity as a main stream genre. The 70’s was a mixed bag of rock, R&B, ballads and country music, mixed in with a little kitsch. Remember, CW McCall? Rock and R&B still dominated though showing its resilience right up until the late 1980’s when Rap came onto the scene. The mix of pop music hits began to change a bit. Rock and roll was being knocked out a bit by Rap and R&B and was no longer the dominant force in pop.

Today, pop music hits has become an amalgamation of all the music genres. You can have a country song, R&B song, and Rap songs all on one pop chart. Indeed, even radio stations have changed around their formats to be more ubiquitous and less focused on only one kind of music. The influences are all still there thanks to rock and roll but the cadence and tunes themselves have changed and transmogrified into the mix of pop music we have adopted in the last five years. Like everything pop music has progressed and expanded exponentially in the 21st century most of which has occurred just in the last five years.

Full Fledged Review of Rock

Bollywood actor Arjun Rampal had this to say about Rock On Movie “It is a new age emotional film which has the youth as the target audience but has universal emotions which everyone can relate to”. He is bang on target. Rock on is a rocking movie, a flick that can attain cult status which Dil Chahta Hai has achieved since many years. It is a welcome sight to see two good movies(whatever be the box office status): Mumbai Meri Jaan and Rock On!! in quick successions.

The story:

The screenplay and treatment of Rock On is similar to Dil Chahta Hai(will have a post about the similarities between the two flicks shortly). The story zooms between the past and present quite like Dil Chahta Hai, about how four friends were one part of an energetic, enterprising rock group Magic, and how the band split due to a bitter experience. The four, Aditya Shroff (Farhan Akhtar), Joe Mascarenhas (Arjun Rampal), Rob Nancy (Luke Kenny), and Killer Drumer(Purab Kohli) are now in their respective fields, not too happy with whatever they are doing.

Farhan Akhtar is an investment banker, Purab is in his father’s jewelry business, Luke Kenny playing keyboard for Anu Malik(yes.. Anu Malik in a cameo sportingly saying that Luke plays ‘original’ music) and Arjun Ramphal is broke, looking for jobs where he could strum his ol’ guitar. His wife Debbie who used to do costumes for the group is not taking care of their fish business.

Aditya’ wife in the movie Sakshi(played by Prachi Desai) feels that her husband is not happy within and there is something amiss in his life. She comes across some photographs and a video in which she sees Farhan and his friends chilling out and practicing rock music. She confronts her now workaholic husband about why he is running away from his real happiness. Coincidentally, Prachi also meets Purab Kohli and comes to know more about the rocking past they had as they spend hours playing music till the wee hours . Prachi arranges for Purab and Luke Kenny to come at Farhan’s birthday party, but seeing that her husband is not exactly happy on seeing old buddies, gives up hope. Prachi leaves home to meet her mother, and Farhan experiences a sense of loss. He meets up with his friends. The four meet, old memories get refreshed and they decide to rock on again. All the four take time to create MAGIK once again; Magik incidentally was the name of their group. We cannot reveal more but the fact is it is not easy for them to be perform once again on stage again, because the priorities and circumstances of each of the four members of the rock group has changed; with pressures and tensions of different sorts. Still they see to it that they give up a terrific rock performance and create history for one last time.

Technicalities:

Full marks to Abhishek Kapoor for coming up with India’s first true blue film on rock music. There have been movies of four-five people bonding together to make a band, like Tere Liye and Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhie in the past, but they were cradles that would rock enough to put you to sleep. But Abhishek Kapoor has come up with superlative stuff in Rock On. He seems to have his mind and heart, at the right place while making the film. He will definitely give competition to Abbas Tyrewala, who directed Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na at the awards next year.

The script does not have the depth of Dil Chahta Hai, but the story is well told. The dialogues are zingy and realistic. The screenplay of the movie makes Rock On quite interesting as the movie swings interestingly between past and present. The music of Shankar Ehsaan Loy is very catch and elevates Rock On to a whole new high.

The movie literally looks like a rock concert when it breaks into music. The choreographer deserves full marks and so does the music. You could actually sense the audience clapping along with the tempo of the rock music. Tumhari Meri Baatein, Sindbad The Sailor, Rock On(title song) , Tum Ho Toh and Pichle Saath Dino Mein are excellently picturized. Superior stuff!

Best scenes of Rock On:
1. The rockification of the Aashiqui number
2. The rock show sequences of Rock On

Minus points of Rock On:
1. The relatively slow pace in the beginning (we can forgive that)
2. The break up between Farhan Akhtar and his girlfriend is not convincing enough(we cannot forgive this)

Best performances of Rock On:

All the four, Farhan Akhtar, Luke Kenny, Purab Kohli and Arjun Ramphal have almost equal roles. Farhan has acted like a veteran though he has just debuted in Rock On. But since he is such a good student of cinema, Farhan has proved his mettle in all the three roles of Rock On: as an actor, as a director and as a singer. Farhan Akhtar looks very convincing as a rock vocalist while Arjun Rampal is apt as a guitarist. Arjun has given his finest and most probably his most popular performance in Rock On; he is so apt that no one else could have fitted the role, though Saif Ali Khan was offered his role in the movie which he had declined. Arjun may be nominated for the awards next year. Luke Kenny is interesting and Purab Kohli is quite convincing. Another debutante, Prachi Kohli underplays herself but looks as pretty as a picture in the film. Sahani Goswami suits and plays her part exceedingly well.

Evolution of Music

Music has been evolving since its creation. This evolution of music has led to a vast variety of music that all people can enjoy. Artists who make good music, are praised and revered for their talents, and recently this has lead to many aspiring musicians who want to acquire fame and fortune through their music. In the United States music in constantly evolving, and in recent years this evolution of music has sped up to a very fast rate. Music has evolved for many reasons including, improved technology, and change in culture, and a desire to create something new.

Primarily change in music has been related to the culture. During the Middle Ages music everyday music was located in two places, the church and the tavern. This was not a good atmosphere for good music to bloom. However during the Baroque period, 1600-1750, wealthy people began to hire musicians to compose music for them. These patrons would pay the musicians to compose and play music for the patrons enjoyment, and for entertainment at his or her parties. Music did not change very much in Europe for a long time. In America music was began to evolve in its own way. This new country had a culture of its own and this was reflected in its music and dancing. One of the main styles of music originated in Detroit, and it is called big band. It is called big band, because a large band was used to create snappy, catchy tunes. This style of music soon became popular in Europe as well as America in the 1920s. Big band music was very positive for America as a means of enjoyment and entertainment.

Adolf Rickenbacker invented the electric guitar in the later 1920s and in doing so he changed music forever. This was the first time that people began to use electricity to amplify their instruments. Furthermore with the invention of the electric guitar came the birth of Jazz music. Before the electric guitar came onto the scene it was nearly impossible to incorporate a guitar into band music because it was not loud enough, but the electric guitar solved the volume issue. African Americans strongly connect rhythm with their music. This can be seen in the tribal music of Africa which consists of drumming and singing. African Americans took hold of the electric guitar and used it to throw poppy grooves over the brass instruments and Jazz was born. Jazz was a type of music that spoke out as a bit of a rebellion against the culture. It was nothing like the music that was played in church, and it was perfect for dancing to. African Americans took hold of Jazz and made it a part of their culture. However racism still ran deep in the American culture and many whites dislike jazz music simply because it was generally performed by black musicians. However white musicians began to play the songs originally written and performed by African Americans, once this began to occur more whites began to appreciate Jazz. Somehow certain whites thought it was OK to listen to Jazz as long as it was performed by other whites. Overall Jazz music was very positive for the American culture because it helped give pride to the African Americans.

As long as the culture continues to change their will be a reflection of this in the music that is composed. America in particular has a culture that is always changing and growing, and this will, and has, lead to a continuing change in music. Rock n Roll came onto the scene in the late 40s and from its start it was about rebellion. The word “rock,” as used in Rock n Roll, means to shake things up, and the word “roll” is slang for sexual intercourse. Rolling Stone argued that Elvis Presley’s hit “That’s alright mama” 1954, was the first Rock n Roll song, but this is very debatable. In the 1950s the youth were moving out from the post war era, and moving into a culture of fun loving freedom. Elvis Presley hit the scene wielding his electric guitar and rocking to catchy tunes. Although by today’s standards Presley’s music is considered tame, in the 1950s he was on the cutting edge of adolescent rebellion. Presley was criticized for gyrating his pelvis during performances, this and his “dirty” lyrics led to a few of his songs being banned from certain radio stations. Elvis could not be stopped and his popularity continued to grow wildly. The culture continued to change with the introduction of birth control during the 60s and this led to hippie era which was deeply rooted in music, particularly folk and rock n roll. Hippies were all about having “free love” which meant that you should be able to have sex with whomever, wherever, and whenever you wanted, as long as you were not hurting anyone else. The Hippie movement has had very negative effects on society, and it was fueled by rock n roll music.

New Technology was introduced in the 1960s-70s that paved the way for many new styles. This technology was the use of digital effects that were placed into songs. This technology was brought into the center of pop culture with disco music. Disco Music has a strong melody with deep beats that are perfect for dancing. This type of dancing isn’t technical in nature people of all different skill levels could participate. However the adolescent culture of the time was split between the pop sound of the disco, and the cool rebellion of rock n roll. Most of these changes in music have been due to the culture, and more directly the culture of the youth. Although people of all ages enjoy the music it is primarily the adolescents that were and are shaping the music in the 20th century and beyond.

The effect of the music on the cultures is hard to place in a strictly positive or negative light. Of the examples of music trends given earlier, some were positive and some were negative. However it cannot be said that they are wholly good or wholly bad. These changes in music reflected the culture that they were brought into, and often these changes brought about good and bad reform. There are some fads in music that many would argue are completely negative, such as rap. The vast majority of rap music that is played on the radio is full of explicit content, and because of this is receives a bad wrap. Rap music is often inspired by gangster life, but people do not consider that when these people are writing music instead of starting fights on the street. Although rap music is often inappropriate it has given people the African American youth something constructive to do with their time, that will not lead them to being perceived as losers by the other gangsters. Therefore rap has both positive and negative aspects as do must trends in music.

America has started several trends and fads in regards to music, and they will continue to do so. Since America is a melting pot of cultures there is a huge wealth of new music that will become apparent as more time passes. If there was to be a standstill in the music industry, there would need to be a standstill in the culture. However the culture of the American youth has been constantly changing at an increasing pace. With all of this change there is no sign that the music industry is going to slow down. New songs are always going to be composed, and new styles of music will always be coming to the surface of the musical world. The study of the popular music in a culture gives a person deep insight on the values of the culture, because a populations culture is directly linked to their music.
